Node-RED on Ubuntu Server - Alexa Setup Guide

Install Node-RED on Ubuntu Server 22.04 or 24.04 LTS via npm. A popular and well-supported Linux server OS for production Node-RED deployments with Alexa integration.

Requirements

Min RAM 512MB (1GB recommended)
Min Storage 2GB
OS Ubuntu Server 22.04 LTS or 24.04 LTS
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • sudo/root access
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

npm ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Update packages: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y
  2. 2 Install Node.js via NodeSource: curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_20.x | sudo -E bash - && sudo apt-get install -y nodejs
  3. 3 Install build tools: sudo apt-get install -y build-essential
  4. 4 Install Node-RED globally: sudo npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
  5. 5 Create a systemd service or use pm2 for process management
  6. 6 Start Node-RED: node-red
  7. 7 Access Node-RED at http://your-server-ip:1880
  8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Ubuntu Server is one of the most popular platforms for Node-RED. All Alexa nodes work natively. If using UFW firewall, open port 1880 with: sudo ufw allow 1880. Consider using pm2 or a systemd service to keep Node-RED running after reboot.
