Node-RED Home Assistant Add-on - Alexa Setup Guide

Install Node-RED as an official add-on from the Home Assistant Add-on Store. The most popular way to combine Node-RED with Home Assistant, providing deep integration through the companion node and seamless Alexa voice control.

Requirements

Min RAM 2GB (4GB recommended for HA + Node-RED)
Min Storage 32GB (shared with Home Assistant)
OS Home Assistant OS or Home Assistant Supervised
Node.js Included in add-on
  • Home Assistant 2023.x or newer
  • Home Assistant Supervisor (not available on HA Core/Container)
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Add-on Store ~5-10 minutes
  1. 1 Open Home Assistant and navigate to Settings > Add-ons
  2. 2 Click Add-on Store in the bottom right
  3. 3 Search for Node-RED and select the official community add-on
  4. 4 Click Install and wait for the download to complete
  5. 5 Configure the add-on options (set a credential_secret)
  6. 6 Toggle Start on boot and Watchdog for reliability
  7. 7 Click Start to launch the add-on
  8. 8 Click Open Web UI or access Node-RED via the sidebar
  9. 9 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

The Home Assistant Node-RED add-on is the most popular smart home integration. All Alexa cloud-based nodes work out of the box. Local discovery nodes (amazon-echo, wemo-emulator) may need the add-on network set to host mode since HA runs add-ons in a sandboxed Docker environment. The node-red-contrib-home-assistant-websocket palette provides deep HA integration alongside Alexa nodes.
