Node-RED npm Install - Alexa Setup Guide

Requirements

• Node.js and npm installed
• Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

1. 1 Install Node.js LTS from https://nodejs.org or via your system package manager
2. 2 Verify installation: node --version && npm --version
3. 3 Install Node-RED globally: sudo npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
4. 4 Start Node-RED: node-red
5. 5 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
6. 6 Optionally use pm2 for process management: npm install -g pm2 && pm2 start node-red
7. 7 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

The npm global install is the most straightforward and universal method for installing Node-RED. No containerization or sandboxing means all Alexa nodes work without restrictions. This is the official recommended approach from the Node-RED project.
