Node-RED with Docker Compose - Alexa Setup Guide

Requirements

• Docker Engine 20.10+
• Docker Compose v2+
• Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

1. 1 Install Docker and Docker Compose on your system
2. 2 Create a project directory: mkdir ~/nodered-stack && cd ~/nodered-stack
3. 3 Create a docker-compose.yml file defining Node-RED and Mosquitto services
4. 4 Create data directories: mkdir -p nodered-data mosquitto/config mosquitto/data mosquitto/log
5. 5 Run the stack: docker compose up -d
6. 6 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
7. 7 MQTT broker available at localhost:1883
8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Docker Compose is ideal for running Node-RED with supporting services like MQTT. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work out of the box. Local-only nodes (amazon-echo, wemo-emulator) may need network_mode: host for device discovery on the local network.
