Node-RED on macOS - Alexa Setup Guide

Install Node-RED on macOS via npm or Homebrew. Great for development, prototyping, and learning Node-RED with Alexa integration on your Mac.

Requirements

Min RAM 1GB (2GB recommended)
Min Storage 1GB
OS macOS 12 Monterey or newer
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • Xcode Command Line Tools (xcode-select --install)
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

npm or Homebrew ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Install Node.js via Homebrew (brew install node) or download from https://nodejs.org
  2. 2 Install Xcode Command Line Tools if needed: xcode-select --install
  3. 3 Install Node-RED globally: npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
  4. 4 Start Node-RED: node-red
  5. 5 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
  6. 6 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

macOS is ideal for Node-RED development and prototyping. All Alexa nodes work natively. If the macOS firewall is enabled, allow incoming connections for Node-RED when prompted. For long-term use, consider a dedicated server or Raspberry Pi instead.
