Node-RED with Home Assistant Docker - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED as a separate Docker container alongside Home Assistant Container. Ideal for Home Assistant Container users who do not have access to the Add-on Store but want Node-RED integration.

Requirements

Min RAM 2GB (4GB recommended for HA + Node-RED)
Min Storage 2GB for Node-RED container
OS Any OS running Docker
Node.js Included in container
  • Docker Engine 20.10+
  • Home Assistant running as a Docker container
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Docker ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Ensure Home Assistant is running in Docker
  2. 2 Create a data directory: mkdir -p /opt/nodered-data
  3. 3 Run Node-RED on the same Docker network as Home Assistant
  4. 4 docker run -d -p 1880:1880 -v /opt/nodered-data:/data --network=host --name nodered nodered/node-red
  5. 5 Access Node-RED at http://your-host-ip:1880
  6. 6 Install node-red-contrib-home-assistant-websocket from the palette manager
  7. 7 Configure the HA server node with your Home Assistant URL and a Long-Lived Access Token
  8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Running Node-RED as a separate Docker container alongside Home Assistant Container gives you full control over both services. Using --network=host ensures all Alexa nodes work including local discovery. Connect to Home Assistant using the websocket palette and a Long-Lived Access Token.
