Node-RED on TrueNAS Scale - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on TrueNAS Scale using its built-in app catalog or custom Docker containers. Linux-based TrueNAS Scale supports Docker natively, making it a versatile NAS and smart home platform.

Requirements

Min RAM 1GB for Node-RED (TrueNAS Scale system needs 8GB+)
Min Storage 1GB for app data
OS TrueNAS Scale 22.12+
Node.js Included in container
  • Apps service configured with a pool for app storage
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

TrueNAS Apps (Docker) ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Go to Apps in the TrueNAS Scale web interface
  2. 2 Configure a storage pool for apps if not already done
  3. 3 Search for Node-RED in the available applications catalog
  4. 4 Click Install and configure the application settings
  5. 5 Set the web port to 1880 and configure storage for persistent data
  6. 6 Click Save to deploy the Node-RED container
  7. 7 Access Node-RED at http://your-truenas-ip:1880
  8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

TrueNAS Scale provides a solid always-on platform for Node-RED. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work out of the box. For local discovery nodes, you may need to configure host networking in the app settings. TrueNAS Scale uses Docker under the hood.
