Node-RED on Synology NAS - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on a Synology NAS using Container Manager (formerly Docker) in DSM 7. Leverage your always-on NAS for smart home automation without additional hardware.

Requirements

Min RAM 2GB (4GB+ recommended)
Min Storage 1GB for container and data
OS Synology DSM 7.0+
Node.js Included in container
  • Synology NAS with Intel or AMD CPU (x86_64)
  • Container Manager package installed from Package Center
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Container Manager (Docker) ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Open Package Center and install Container Manager
  2. 2 Open Container Manager and go to Registry
  3. 3 Search for nodered/node-red and download the latest tag
  4. 4 Go to Image, select nodered/node-red, and click Run
  5. 5 Map port 1880 to host port 1880
  6. 6 Create a folder on your NAS (e.g., /docker/nodered) and mount it to /data in the container
  7. 7 Start the container
  8. 8 Access Node-RED at http://your-nas-ip:1880
  9. 9 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Synology NAS is an excellent always-on platform for Node-RED. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work out of the box. For local discovery nodes, enable host network mode in Container Manager. Note that ARM-based Synology models may have limited container support.
