Node-RED Snap Install - Alexa Setup Guide

Install Node-RED as a Snap package with a single command. The simplest way to install Node-RED on Ubuntu and other Linux distributions that support Snapcraft, with automatic updates included.

Requirements

Min RAM 512MB (1GB recommended)
Min Storage 500MB
OS Ubuntu, Debian, Fedora, or any Linux with snapd
Node.js Bundled with snap
  • snapd installed
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

snap ~2-5 minutes
  1. 1 Ensure snapd is installed (pre-installed on Ubuntu)
  2. 2 Install Node-RED: sudo snap install node-red
  3. 3 Node-RED starts automatically after installation
  4. 4 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
  5. 5 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Snap is the simplest installation method but runs Node-RED in a confined sandbox. This can cause permission issues with nodes that need access to hardware, serial ports, or certain network features. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work fine. If you encounter permission problems, consider the npm installation method instead.
