Node-RED on Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on the compact Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W. With only 512MB RAM, this board is best for lightweight flows and headless operation. Budget-friendly option for simple Alexa automations.

Min Storage 8GB microSD minimum (16GB recommended)
OS Raspberry Pi OS Lite (Bookworm) 32-bit
Node.js 18.x LTS
  • Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W
  • 5V 2.5A micro-USB power supply
  • Network access via built-in Wi-Fi
  • Headless setup recommended to conserve RAM

Installation

Official Script ~20-30 minutes
  1. 1 Flash Raspberry Pi OS Lite (32-bit) to a microSD card using Raspberry Pi Imager
  2. 2 Enable SSH and configure Wi-Fi in Imager settings before flashing
  3. 3 Boot the Pi Zero 2 W and connect via SSH
  4. 4 Run the official install script: bash <(curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/node-red/linux-installers/master/deb/update-nodejs-and-nodered)
  5. 5 Enable Node-RED to start on boot: sudo systemctl enable nodered
  6. 6 Start Node-RED: sudo systemctl start nodered
  7. 7 Access Node-RED at http://your-pi-ip:1880
  8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

The Pi Zero 2 W works for basic Node-RED Alexa setups but the 512MB RAM is limiting. Avoid installing too many nodes or running complex flows. Cloud-based Alexa nodes are preferred as they offload processing. Consider a swap file for stability.
