Node-RED on Raspberry Pi 5 - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on the Raspberry Pi 5 with improved CPU performance and 4-8GB RAM options. Uses the same official install script as earlier Pi models but benefits from significantly faster processing.

Requirements

Min RAM 4GB (8GB recommended)
Min Storage 16GB microSD or USB SSD
OS Raspberry Pi OS (Bookworm) 64-bit
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • Raspberry Pi 5 (4GB or 8GB model)
  • Official 27W USB-C power supply
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Official Script ~15-20 minutes
  1. 1 Flash Raspberry Pi OS (64-bit) to your microSD card or SSD using Raspberry Pi Imager
  2. 2 Boot the Pi and complete initial setup (enable SSH for headless use)
  3. 3 Run the official install script: bash <(curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/node-red/linux-installers/master/deb/update-nodejs-and-nodered)
  4. 4 Enable Node-RED to start on boot: sudo systemctl enable nodered
  5. 5 Start Node-RED: sudo systemctl start nodered
  6. 6 Access Node-RED at http://your-pi-ip:1880
  7. 7 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED
