Node-RED on QNAP NAS - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on a QNAP NAS using Container Station. Turn your always-on NAS into a smart home automation hub with Alexa integration.

Requirements

Min RAM 2GB (4GB+ recommended)
Min Storage 1GB for container and data
OS QTS 5.0+ or QuTS hero
Node.js Included in container
  • QNAP NAS with Intel or AMD CPU (x86_64)
  • Container Station installed from App Center
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Container Station (Docker) ~10-15 minutes
  1. 1 Open App Center and install Container Station
  2. 2 Open Container Station and click Create
  3. 3 Search for nodered/node-red in Docker Hub
  4. 4 Select the latest tag and click Create
  5. 5 Configure port mapping: host port 1880 to container port 1880
  6. 6 Add a volume mount from a shared folder (e.g., /Container/nodered) to /data
  7. 7 Click Create to start the container
  8. 8 Access Node-RED at http://your-nas-ip:1880
  9. 9 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

QNAP NAS with Container Station makes deploying Node-RED simple. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work out of the box. For local discovery nodes, switch to host network mode in Container Station. Ensure your QNAP has an x86_64 CPU for full container compatibility.
