Node-RED on Proxmox LXC - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED in a lightweight Linux container (LXC) on Proxmox VE. More efficient than a full VM with near-native performance, ideal for home lab and server environments.

Requirements

Min RAM 512MB (1GB recommended for LXC container)
Min Storage 4GB for LXC root filesystem
OS Debian or Ubuntu LXC template on Proxmox VE
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • Proxmox VE 7.0+
  • Debian 12 or Ubuntu 22.04 LXC template
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

npm inside LXC ~15-20 minutes
  1. 1 Create a new LXC container in Proxmox using a Debian 12 or Ubuntu template
  2. 2 Allocate at least 512MB RAM and 4GB disk space
  3. 3 Start the container and log in via console or SSH
  4. 4 Update packages: apt update && apt upgrade -y
  5. 5 Install Node.js: curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_20.x | bash - && apt-get install -y nodejs build-essential
  6. 6 Install Node-RED: npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
  7. 7 Create a systemd service for Node-RED or start manually: node-red
  8. 8 Access Node-RED at http://your-container-ip:1880
  9. 9 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Proxmox LXC containers are bridged to the local network by default, so local discovery nodes like amazon-echo and wemo-emulator generally work without extra configuration. LXC is more lightweight than a full VM while providing good isolation.
