Node-RED with Portainer - Alexa Setup Guide

Deploy Node-RED through Portainer's web-based Docker management interface. One-click deployment with visual container management, perfect for users who prefer a GUI over command-line Docker.

Requirements

Min RAM 1GB (2GB recommended with Portainer overhead)
Min Storage 2GB
OS Any OS running Docker with Portainer
Node.js Included in container
  • Docker Engine 20.10+
  • Portainer CE or Business Edition
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Portainer GUI ~5-10 minutes
  1. 1 Install Docker and Portainer if not already running
  2. 2 Access Portainer at https://localhost:9443
  3. 3 Navigate to Containers > Add Container
  4. 4 Set image to nodered/node-red:latest
  5. 5 Map port 1880 to host port 1880
  6. 6 Add a volume mount: bind /opt/nodered-data to /data in the container
  7. 7 Click Deploy the container
  8. 8 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
  9. 9 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Portainer provides a convenient GUI for managing the Node-RED Docker container. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work immediately. For local-only nodes, switch the container network mode to Host in Portainer's container settings to enable device discovery.
