Node-RED on Podman - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED in a rootless Podman container as a secure, daemonless alternative to Docker. Compatible with Docker images and commands, with improved security through rootless operation.

Requirements

Min RAM 512MB (1GB recommended)
Min Storage 1GB
OS Linux (Fedora, RHEL, CentOS, Ubuntu, Debian)
Node.js Included in container
  • Podman 3.0+
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

Podman ~5-10 minutes
  1. 1 Install Podman on your system (e.g., sudo apt install podman or sudo dnf install podman)
  2. 2 Pull the official Node-RED image: podman pull docker.io/nodered/node-red
  3. 3 Create a data directory for persistence: mkdir -p ~/.node-red
  4. 4 Run the container: podman run -d -p 1880:1880 -v ~/.node-red:/data:Z --name nodered docker.io/nodered/node-red
  5. 5 Access Node-RED at http://localhost:1880
  6. 6 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Podman uses the same Node-RED container images as Docker. Cloud-based Alexa nodes work immediately. For local-only nodes (amazon-echo, wemo-emulator), use --net=host to enable device discovery. Note the :Z suffix on volume mounts for SELinux systems.
