Node-RED on Orange Pi 5 - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED on the Orange Pi 5, powered by the Rockchip RK3588S with up to 32GB RAM. A high-performance single-board computer alternative with excellent value for demanding smart home setups.

Requirements

Min RAM 4GB (8GB+ recommended)
Min Storage 16GB eMMC or microSD (SSD via M.2 recommended)
OS Armbian or Orange Pi OS (Debian/Ubuntu-based)
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • Orange Pi 5 (4GB, 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB model)
  • 5V 4A USB-C power supply
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

npm ~15-25 minutes
  1. 1 Flash Armbian or Orange Pi OS to eMMC or microSD card
  2. 2 Boot the board and complete initial setup
  3. 3 Install Node.js via NodeSource: curl -fsSL https://deb.nodesource.com/setup_20.x | sudo -E bash - && sudo apt-get install -y nodejs
  4. 4 Install build tools: sudo apt-get install -y build-essential
  5. 5 Install Node-RED globally: sudo npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
  6. 6 Start Node-RED: node-red
  7. 7 Access Node-RED at http://your-device-ip:1880
  8. 8 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED
