Node-RED with openHAB - Alexa Setup Guide

Run Node-RED alongside openHAB as a companion automation engine. Combine openHAB's device integration with Node-RED's visual flow programming and Alexa voice control.

Requirements

Min RAM 1GB for Node-RED (plus openHAB requirements)
Min Storage 1GB for Node-RED
OS Linux, Windows, macOS, or Docker
Node.js 18.x or 20.x LTS
  • openHAB 3.x or 4.x running
  • Node.js installed on the same system or separate host
  • Network access for Alexa cloud integration

Installation

npm ~15-20 minutes
  1. 1 Ensure Node.js is installed on the system running or accessible to openHAB
  2. 2 Install Node-RED globally: sudo npm install -g --unsafe-perm node-red
  3. 3 Start Node-RED: node-red
  4. 4 Access Node-RED at http://your-host-ip:1880
  5. 5 Install node-red-contrib-openhab3 from the palette manager for openHAB integration
  6. 6 Configure the openHAB connection with your openHAB server URL
  7. 7 Install Alexa integration node via the palette manager inside Node-RED

Alexa Integration

Node-RED works well as a companion to openHAB, adding visual flow-based automation and Alexa voice control. Note that openHAB also has its own Alexa skill integration, so you can choose which approach fits your setup. All Alexa nodes work when Node-RED runs directly on the network.
